Chilkat Collar 2021

Chilkat Collar

2021. Wool, cedar, leather, and metal cones.

I began working on the concept of this collar piece in October 2020, when I was inspired by a fabric shoulder piece my aunt made me that draped like a scarf. I knew the construction would be a hurdle, but with time and patience, and a lot of trial and error I was able to bring this piece to life. In the six months it took to weave this piece so much in life changed, with the passing of family members, finding out I was finally pregnant, and those moments were woven into the collar. Different shapes within the pice will forever spark memories of moments. It made me wonder what events in history, celebrations, and traumas were woven into the Chilkat robes that we study today, as our ancestors took the time to weave them over the span of a year or more.
